Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) was a pioneering figure in American modernism and a key woman artist of the 20th century. Rising to prominence within the New York avant-garde, centered around Alfred Stieglitz, her work is often reduced to clichés about her flower paintings. However, this new book, edited by Tate curator Tanya Barson, reveals O’Keeffe as a complex artist with a diverse body of work that spans landscapes, nature studies, still lifes, and anthropological paintings. It reassesses her place in 20th-century art with essays by a new generation of scholars, exploring her role in the early modern avant-garde, her identity, the cultural influences on her work, and the relationship between painting and photography. The book also includes contemporary reviews of her early exhibitions, providing insight into her reception at the time.
